VOIP (Voice Over IP) is a clever way to
save on your voice call charges,
especially when compared to Fleet rates.
VOIP integrates into the boat's PABX,
as a CO (common office) telephone line.
Of course, a VOIP adapter is needed
to take the analog voice signal from the
PABX, and convert it to Internet
Protocol (IP).
Once the VOIP adapter has converted
voice to IP, the stream is sent over the
current Internet connection (VSAT, STS,
Cellular Data, etc).
Recent generic providers of VOIP
include:
Most VSAT Airtime Providers (Vizada,
MTN,
KVH) offer their own VOIP service,
and *may* require you to use their own
service, and *may* block you from using
a generic provider.

VOIP Upside:
- Lower cost (some services like
Vonage offer a flat rate monthly
plan from US$25 - US$45)!
- On average about same voice
quality as low speed voice on Fleet.
VOIP Downside:
- Some VSAT providers will block
VOIP traffic, or force you to use
their internal VOIP provider.
