| Cellular Data Most
of us have cell phones that can send and
receive email. Now let's take that
a step farther, and allow the whole boat
to send and receive data!
Cellular data routers (like
the Cradlepoint shown at the right) move
data only. They allow you to
choose an Express card or USB adapter
from your favorite cellular provider.
You can expect speeds around 400kbps
from the current 3G networks. 4G
networks should exceed 1Mbps!
Cellular terminals (like the
Ericsson W25) can do both data or voice.
Of course, voice always wins, so if you
are moving data, and a call comes in,
the data will pause. Cellular
terminals are GSM only, and cannot use a
USB or Express card.
A cell terminal normally has one RJ11
for voice to the PABX, and 1-4 LAN jacks
for data traffic.
It goes without saying that you must
have a 'tethered data plan' from your
cell provider. These are normally
$60 a month. Also note that most
cell providers have a 5GB per month cap,
so watch your amount of traffic you
move.
